The transition to college is a huge adjustment. While rates of completion of high school may be increasing, rates for completion of college are dropping. There are many reasons why students struggle in college. One reason is that students dealing with ADD/ADHD have to find new coping strategies, not the least of which is self-advocacy, a skill that is vital to the ADD/ADHD student’s success. Some colleges offer great support in many ways, including having advisors and tutors available to help. Unfortunately, many students who are struggling don’t have the resources they need. One important thing to know is that these struggles do not mean that the student is incapable of graduating from college.
Hiring a coach to help the student can be a great step in the right direction. A coach can help the student plan, self-advocate, stay organized, and conquer the daily tasks that sometimes seem insurmountable. If you are interested in exploring this service, please contact me.
