In today’s society, parents want to do everything in their power to help their children succeed. With a lagging economy and tough job market, who doesn’t worry about how their kids will get a good education and ultimately a good job? With all of the hype out there, many parents feel the need to hire a private consultant to find the very best college for their children; however, buyer beware! If you want your child to find the college where s/he will be successful, what should you be looking for in college consultation? All that glitters is not necessarily gold!
Just as there is much more to college than a slick brochure (they even make brochures that play music now!) there is much more to college counseling than talking the talk. Here are some crucial criteria to look for in a college consultant:
✩ Does your consultant have a Master’s Degree in School Counseling or Education?
✩ Is your consultant certified by a state Department of Education as a School
Counselor or by another accredited agency as an educational consultant?
✩ Does your consultant have counseling and education experience that allows
him/her to understand the emotional and educational issues involved with the
college process (for instance, many children have individual needs that require
attention)?
✩ Does your consultant understand the complexities of the testing system and the
types of high school experience necessary for particular colleges?
✩ Did you know that statistics show an approximately 50% rate of graduation from
college in four years? That means that is it critical to make sure that your child
finds the best match for college and is prepared for the challenges he or she will
face.
